Polar Park Score Board Idea

Ever see the billboards that show our National Debt

We should add the cost, or for that profits, from the DIF to the Polar Park scoreboard for the taxpayers to know exactly how their investment in Polar Park is doing.

Lets not forget how Polar Park was sold to the taxpayers

Revenue neutral to the taxpayers

Speaking of billboards and other advertisements, if anyone at Massport had a clue they would be advertising Worcester Airport at Polar Park. Depending on the day/time of the game you have anywhere from 5,000 to almost 10,000 people attending games from all over the Worcester and Metro West areas. But, just like the free parking thing at Worcester Airport they are completely blowing a great opportunity to market the airport.

Hey ORH fan. Open your eyes, theres an airport billboard on the wall near home plate. At least it was there last season. Also heard announcements, so open your ears too. Havent been to a game yet this season, but if they're the official airport for the woosox, there should still be some advertsing at the park. As for free parking. Its a moot point. The Spags mentality makes people still find rides from friends or family so they dont have to burn gas. Worse, they're getting rides to Logan after finding a fare that was $5.00 cheaper.

^^ They could easily have a digital billboard on 290 as well as the mass pike promoting the airport. I always wish there was a sign on pleasant street as well as those two highways showing not only the way to go to the airport (because those signs are everywhere), but also show when flights are arriving and departing from ORH with the destinations and airlines. You could have it set like this:
Airline: Delta
Destination: LaGuardia Airport (LGA)
Departure Time: 2:24 PM
If people driving by the billboards saw that there were flights and it showed the live status of them, more people could look at it and see where you can take a flight out of Worcester and what times. One thing that might deter people away still (which Pre Covid it was a common trend with airports like Worcester) is secondary airports use to always be more money per person than main airports like Boston and JFK when trying to fly out of them, but some people don’t realize that it’s no longer the case. Look up flights to JFK from Boston and Worcester, it’s cheaper to fly out of Worcester than Boston. As this comment is being typed, ORH to JFK is $46 ($81 with a carry on) using JetBlue for both flights, and it’s $74 with delta out of Boston for a morning flight. LaGuardia it’s the same way, Boston to LaGuardia is $54 for either a 10pm flight with delta or a 6am flight with JetBlue with it costing $79 if you want a carry on. Worcester to LaGuardia is only $50 for a 2pm flight with delta. If you can do a connecting flight, unless the connecting times are either really short or long, Worcester would be a no brainer if people knew. Some people like ones with disability’s or one with very young kids might prefer Boston because of a direct flight and having kids with a stroller and your bags can be a hassle. But like I said, if you can do a connecting flight, then you would really be missing out. People don’t even realize that the price difference you think your saving flying out of Boston instead of Worcester, your spending just to get to Boston instead.

I was not pointing to the real ORH fan’s comment. I was adding onto the first comment. Another thing to add on, even when free parking possibly ends in June. Anyone can take a city bus to union station and then take it to the airport via route 2 pleasant street. If you want to park up there, if rates don’t change then $7 per day or $42 per the week is such a steal for an airport.

I stand corrected regarding the advertisement at Polar Park. There is a small advertisement on the wall between home plate and third base. I was at the game yesterday and happened to be sitting on the third base side so couldn't see it. In all honesty its probably in about the worst spot for an advertisement in the park. A good portion of the spectators are sitting behind it or to the side of it and it's so small and the color is so bad that I doubt many people sitting in the outfield looking in can even make it out. I'm going to another game this weekend and am sitting on the outfield wall so I will investigate a little further.

As for announcements about the airport, I heard none at the game yesterday nor did I hear any at the multiple games I went to last year. I also don't get how you say the free parking is a moot point. Anything with the word "free" gets people's attention. I find it to be a major blunder that I live 3 miles from the airport and drive by it multiple times per week and only found out about the free parking several months into it being offered by reading this blog. To be fair, free parking wouldn't make a difference to me either way since I live so close and would just have a neighbor or friend drop me off, but you're telling me that people in the Metro West area wouldn't find that appealing? Even when parking goes back to $7 a day or whatever it is that's still a great marketing opportunity as well. Park at Worcester airport for a week for the price of a single day +/- at Logan plus no traffic and tolls to deal with. I think the way this airport is being run is pathetic and a waste of tax payer money. Used to be a frequent user when Direct Air offered direct flights to multiple Florida destinations. And I don't need a lecture about how Direct Air failed. Regardless of whatever happened with Direct Air, the planes were always full or close to it because they gave people what they wanted, direct flights to leisure destinations. Now with all the issues with JetBlue I have no interest in trying to fly through JFK and waste a whole day traveling due to potential delays, etc. Was looking at flying on Delta to West Palm Beach out of Worcester but the connection time is way to tight, like 40 minutes at LGA, and if I miss that it's another 4 hours before the next flight to West Palm Beach with an arrival after 10pm so it's just not worth the headache. I'll probably just fly out of Providence.

Hey ORH fan. If you are really a fan of the airport, why aren't you following them on social media, instead of following an unofficial blog? You would have learned about free parking a long time ago.

And hey anonymous, if you kept it under 80mph, you might see the digital billboards promoting the airporT on 290. Maybe Massport needs to bitch to the billboard company to reduce the circulation time on the screen. Or better yet, get a stationary billboard. And put them on the Pike or 146 to catch the eye of those heading to Logan or Green.

Sorry, I'm not glued to social media like a lot of other people are. I haven't seen the billboards on 290 either and I'm on 290 pretty regularly as well. Whatever Massport is doing isn't working. Look at New Haven Airport. For years they had a single flight to AA's hub in Philly then Avelo comes in 6 months ago with flights to Florida and the airport is now booming. Last I checked they now will have 12 destinations from New Haven and they are continuing to grow. All of this in just 6 months. Maybe the people over at MediocrePort, sorry I mean Massport should take a clue from the people running the New Haven Airport because whatever they are doing there seems to be working.

Just read that Massport is going to be spending $18 million to rehabilitate Runway 29.
Anonymous said…
^that is confirmed to be true. Runway 11 was rehabbed back I believe in 2020 so they’re finishing the other half soon. Not sure how the schedule will work for when it’ll happen or if it’ll affect flight schedules at all. Should hear more about it in the coming weeks as it was just announced a couple hours ago

Enjoyed another show at the Hanover tonight. Still major issues with the elevators at the garage. One was completely out of order. A patron told me she was stuck on the other one last week when the doors wouldn't open. I don't understand why the City has $175 million for the ballpark and $4 million to buy the Denholm Building, but they can't replace the two elevators at the Federal Plaza Garage.
ORH Fan said…
They can't fix the elevators because they just spent $250,000 on a few lights under the Madison Street railroad bridge.

Last month the City moved $44,000.00 from Federal Plaza to the ball park. That is probably money that could have been used to help pay for replacing the elevators.

The lighting under the Green St bridge was a must if the City wants to have people park at the Library lot to attend WooSox games. People are hesitant at night in that area and the lighting should help. After 4 years of baseball, baseball, baseball and more baseball, the City needs to refocus it's attention and resources from the Polar Park/Canal District area to other areas of the City. I would recommend starting with repairing roads throughout the City because they are awful. Additionally, the comment on the elevators at the garage is not the first time I have heard that concern. If we wish to have a thriving theatre fixing the elevators at the garage that services the theatre is a no brainer and the City should not just default to raising the rates to pay for the repairs. The garage is probably one item on a City wide list of repairs/improvements that have been deferred because so much attention and money has been focused around Polar Park. The City Council should be compiling a new list to focus the attention of the next City Manager.

One thing I will say though, I like how the airport is being used for people flying in when events are in Worcester, instead of flying into Logan or Bradley and being driven up here by bus. At the Frozen Four regionals a couple weeks ago in Worcester, Western Michigan and the University of Minnesota flew into Worcester (other 2 schools were Umass and Northeastern so they didn’t need too). Today, I was at the airport watching Delta, JetBlue, and American land. The airport was first packed and a lot of flights looked to be sold out or close because the airport was very crowded. What I wasn’t expecting to see was WWE’s private plane landing at the Worcester Airport right after those three other planes arrived. They’re having smack down at the DCU center tonight and was a huge surprise that they were landing there considering the headquarters is in Connecticut. If only the Worcester Railers and Massachusetts Pirates when they fly out to go to games far away used the airport. Doesn’t make sense why they are not.

Was at Polar Park again today and sat on the Worcester Wall. Looked in to where the Worcester Airport advertisement is on the wall by home plate and you can't even read it. It's too small and the coloring of it is lousy. I asked the 3 friends I was with if they could read it and one of them could make out part of it but not the whole thing. They need something more prominent with better coloring out on one of the outfield walls where the majority of the park can see it. They should also be sponsoring some type of contest where they give away flight vouchers at the game. The people they should be marketing to are families and college students and you get 5,000 to almost 10,000 of them in that stadium per game depending on the day of the week. Seems like just another wasted opportunity.
