City Manager Search

The City Council Tuesday night appointed Eric Batista acting city manager.

The appointment is effective June 1.

Batista, an assistant city manager, will replace outgoing City Manager Edward M. Augustus Jr., who recently announced he will step down at the end of May. In keeping with language in the city charter, Batista will serve as acting city manager until a new city manager is appointed.

Batista told the council he was honored to serve as acting city manager. Batista has worked in the city manager's office in various roles since 2012, and was most recently serving along with Nicole Valentine as assistant city manager.

The subtext of a portion of the discussion Tuesday was that Batista could end up being a permanent replacement. District 3 Councilor George Russell floated the idea of giving Batista a two-year contract, and District 2 Councilor Candy Mero-Carlson said she would back him for the permanent job.
