Punta Cana is a very popular vacation spot. It's known for the hundred or so All-Inclusive resorts. I think they attract more visitors than any other island in the Caribbean. I've been there three times.
The Expedia flights I checked were a little bit cheaper than the rate you stated.
I usually book my trips down there with the Cheapcaribbean.com company. They had only one flight from ORH, but it didn't leave here until 5pm. Also there was a six hour layover at JFK.
How about one or two flights per week to San Juan?
