MiLB teams face sales, bankruptcy as league cancels 2020 season
Here are some key points:
- Unlike MLB, minor league teams never had the possibility of playing in empty stadiums as a majority of their revenue comes from ticket sales and stadium purchases. Lantz called games without fans a "nonstarter."
- “If coronavirus goes into next spring, it’s going to be really hard for some of our teams to survive based on loan payments on ballparks,” Lantz said. “I would fully expect teams to go up for sale or declare bankruptcy.” Lantz did not list specific teams.
All this begs the question.
What is the amount of money a team, the PawSox or any minor league team, will be willing to pay the City of Worcester to lease the stadium???
Too bad we did not have a signed lease in place before COVID.
